Here&#8217;s why <strong>the trades are a natural fit for military veterans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentiment was front and center during our recent Veterans Build the Future webinar, which brought together workforce leaders, employers, and veterans themselves to explore one powerful idea:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, from structured leadership to mission-first mindsets, veterans already have the skills that the construction industry is looking for. However, bridging that gap takes more than just posting a job or translating a resume. It takes understanding, investment, and community. Here&#8217;s what we learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Trades Are a Natural Fit for Military Veterans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, veterans bring something unique to the table: the ability to stay calm under pressure, lead with discipline, follow protocol, and think strategically while working as part of a team.As Lavan Konshak, Program Director at the OSHA Education Center, shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans know how to get the job done. They\u2019ve worked in high-stress environments and bring a mission-first mindset. You can\u2019t teach that in a classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Chris Eccleston, Navy veteran and founder of Delmarva Veteran Builders, knows this firsthand.After struggling to get a foot in the door post-service, he vetstarted by picking up trash on job sites\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.delmarvaveteranbuilders.com\/\">then built a multimillion-dollar construction company focused on hiring fellow veterans.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t even get interviews. People said I was \u2018overqualified\u2019 because they didn\u2019t understand my military experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, that&#8217;s why he built a company that doesn&#8217;t just hire veterans\u2014it invests in them. In particular, from career pathways to community service, Chris&#8217;s team fosters belonging and growth, something many veterans crave after transitioning out of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barriers Trades for Military Veterans Face\u2014And How to Overcome Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans face significant obstacles when re-entering the civilian workforce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gaps in employment history<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of certifications or civilian-recognized credentials<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation and housing instability<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mental health or substance use recovery<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mismatch between military structure and the informal nature of job sites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephanie Banat and Valerie Pena of Tunnel to Towers work closely with veterans every day, helping them navigate those challenges. Therefore, their advice to employers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognize military experience as valid and valuable<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdmgroup.com\/news-insights\/apprenticeship-benefits-for-businesses\/\">Provide entry-level roles and earn-while-you-learn programs<\/a><br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Donate tools, gear, and provide commuter assistance<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build mentorship opportunities with other veterans<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about hiring. It\u2019s about showing up with empathy, flexibility, and a plan for support,\u201d Stephanie explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Employers Often Get Wrong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, one major takeaway from the conversation? Employers also need coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Piper, who leads veteran hiring strategy at Lowe\u2019s, shared that the burden of translation shouldn\u2019t fall solely on the veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans don\u2019t need fixing. Hiring managers need educating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, at <a href=\"https:\/\/talent.lowes.com\/us\/en\/military-community\">Lowe&#8217;s, every store that employs veterans<\/a> uses camo vests as a visual badge of service. As a result, that small detail helps foster camaraderie, builds retention, and empowers veterans to recruit peers through word-of-mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employers were encouraged to start small but stay strategic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Build internal buy-in from leadership<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Train hiring managers to read military experience<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus on ROI: veterans are productive, loyal, and promote faster<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t just build job listings\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/demo.tradescouts.com\/mission\">build career pathways<\/a><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t charity,\u201d Michael said. \u201cVeterans are good business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digital Portfolios: How Trades for Military Veterans Tell Their Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, at the core of Trade Scouts is a belief that traditional resumes don&#8217;t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaun Merrell, Trade Scouts founder, built the platform to give veterans the tools to <em>show their value<\/em> through dynamic digital portfolios.
